A Nottinghamshire politician says he will keep working as a councillor - despite being charged with the rape of a boy under 16.

Councillor Jason Zadrozny, leader of the Ashfield Independents at the county council and a representative on Ashfield District council, denies the charges of three counts of rape and four counts of indecent assault on a boy under the age of 16 - all alleged to have taken place between September 2, 2003, and April 30, 2004.

He also denies three counts of engaging in sexual activity with a boy aged 13 to 15 between May 1, 2004 and September 30, 2006.

In a statement sent to the Post, the 35-year-old of Kirby-in-Ashfield, said: "I look forward to clearing my name. In the meantime, I will continue to represent my constituents in the conscientious manner they are accustomed to."

Nottinghamshire Police said Zadrozny has been bailed to appear at Mansfield Magistrates' Court on March 30.

Both Nottinghamshire County Council and Ashfield District Council said they had been told by the force of the charges, but it is now a matter for the courts.
