Shock after stabbing outside McDonald's in Nottingham city centre

Violence once again closed off a busy city centre street – with a stabbing that left a man needing hospital treatment.

Two teenagers and a man were arrested following the incident outside McDonald's, on the corner of Maypole Yard and Clumber Street, at 3.30am on Monday.

Parts of the busy shopping street were cordoned off and the fast food restaurant was closed until just before 10.30am.

The male victim was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre with minor injuries and he has since been released.

Two teenagers, both males aged 17 and 19, and another man were being questioned by officers on Monday night.

It is the latest in a line of at least 14 stabbings in Nottingham in the past year which led to a plea from a city centre police chief for young men to stop carrying knives.

Shoppers out in force in town on Monday said they were shocked to see the police tape.

Retired sales assistant Irene Kent, 48, of Dunkirk, said: "When things like this happen it makes you feel nervous to go into town. But you have to carry on because otherwise you wouldn't leave the house with everything that goes on now.

"It is frightening and it is sad because most people now just say it is just another stabbing."

TV engineer Trevor Hales, 64, of Long Eaton, said: "I just don't understand why people carry knives. I am shocked by this but not surprised because it is happening a lot now.

"I think all places should be closed at 2am and anyone out after that should be stopped and searched."

Shopper John Guzewicz said he believed more should be done to tackle the problem.

The 61-year-old, of Arnold, said: "I think we need harder punishments– whether it is for dropping litter or for a stabbing. This sort of thing happens everywhere, not just here, but it does put a bad light on the city."

A police spokeswoman said: "We were called at 3.30am to Clumber Street. A man had suffered a stab wound and was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre.

"He has since been released. The men were all arrested on suspicion of GBH."

Due to Monday's incident, McDonald's had to close for several hours while the police investigation took place and a cordon from the Santander bank to the shoe shop Footasylum was in place until 10am.

A spokesman from the chain said: "We are normally open 24 hours and every day of the year except Christmas, unless there has been an incident like this."

In an interview with the Post in September, Nottinghamshire Police Chief Superintendent Mike Manley appealed to the city's young men not to carry knives after a number of stabbings which resulted in deaths, with victims included Julie Semper, 47; Joshua Bradley, 19; John Parker, 43; and Karl Bloxham, 39.

A quiet neighbourhood was left shaken after the body of a 58-year-old man was found at his home.

Crime scene investigators cordoned off the property in Coningswath Road in Carlton following the shocking discovery on Saturday afternoon.

Forensic teams, infection control specialists, police officers and detectives worked through the night and into Sunday – whilst several ambulance and paramedic vehicles were also at the scene.

Nottinghamshire Police will be working on a post-mortem.

Detectives continued to make enquiries door-to-door on Sunday afternoon as the investigation went into its second day.

Nearby residents described the middle-aged man as quiet and someone who kept to himself.

Carl Brown, 47, has lived opposite the house on the same road with his wife Julie, 43, for 20 years.

The self-employed builder said: "I went to pick up Julie from work and noticed all the sirens.

"I looked through the bedroom window before I went out and saw an ambulance, two ambulance response vehicles – I counted at least four of those and thought something must have gone off.

"I went to bed at 11pm and the emergency services were still there.

He added: "There have been lots of police cars there – it was ringing alarm bells because you just don't know what's happened.

"On Saturday night there was a minimum of police six cars and two CID cars as well.

"The police asked us if we heard anything between 8am and 3pm and that was it.

"We just wanted to know what was happening."

Julie, a customer service assistant, said: "There were two paramedic cars there until at least 7.30pm that night.

"It's just surreal. I went to work, I came home and there were all these blue lights flashing."

Neighbours reported seeing two cars being taken away during the course of the investigation.

The cordon extended around the house and into the side garden of a house behind the property.

Two numbered evidence cards were seen on the front lawn on Sunday afternoon as forensics officers looked through the house and back garden.

David Budding, 68, of Coningswath Road, said: "The ambulance came first, then the paramedics, then there were four police cars and later on there was a riot van.

"We were looking because it's on your doorstep, not that we were being nosy – I think everyone else was the same.

"It's terrible, I can't stand looking at it, I just can't believe it."

By Sunday afternoon, there were still two crime investigation vans parked outside the house, as well as a number of other police cars dotted around the area.

Alexi Gray, 47, also of Coningswath Road, moved to the area in May.

She added: "It's just shocking, I thought I had moved to a quiet neighbourhood - it's usually very quiet and peaceful."

Detective Superintendent Kate Meynell, of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, said: "At this early stage of the investigation we are very keen to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard any suspicious activity in Coningswath Road in the days prior to the discovery of this man's body.

"Any activity which you may have noticed, no matter how trivial it might have seemed at the time, could be vital to our inquiry."

If anyone has any information about this incident, call Nottinghamshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 449 of January 9.

IT man asked girl, 14, to lift jumper on web cam

A high-flying IT specialist used his works laptop to contact a 14-year-old girl and make sexually explicit remarks to her.

James Bird posed online in chat rooms and on Skype as 'Jamie.1' and asked the underage girl to lift her jumper on a web cam.

She refused, but he told her what she was doing was sexually exciting him and the following day he contacted her online again where she told him she was with a boy.

He asked the two of them to kiss for him on the web cam again, saying it would sexually arouse him, while keeping his identity from them secret by saying his own camera was not working.

Again they refused and the girl's mother discovered the online exchange when she examined her daughter's mobile phone, came across her Skype conversations with Bird and called the police.

The 38-year-old, who Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court was told has kept his £39,000-a-year digital strategist job despite his conviction, admitted to inciting an underage girl into sexual activity.

In an interview, he told detectives he had been accessing internet chat rooms to talk to younger women late at night after his wife and two children had gone to bed.

He told them he had been doing it for two years because the "intimate and physical" side of his marriage was lacking.

Now he has been ordered to sign the sex offenders' register for seven years and has been handed a 26-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.

John Hay, for Bird, said: "He fully accepts responsibility for what he has done. He had a happy life with a wife and two children but there was an element that was not fulfilled and that was the intimate, physical side of his life.

"For two years he was engaged in this activity where he would talk to younger women in chat rooms looking to engage in stimulation.

"At the time of this offence he thought the girl was an older age even though he could see a school uniform (on the web cam).

"He thought she might be underage and he let it overtake him.

"It is (a) very serious (offence), he understands that."

Peter Bettany, prosecuting, said the offending took place over two days in September 2014 where Bird was then living, in Turnberry Close, Ilkeston.

The hearing was told he and his wife have now split up, are going through a divorce and he now lives in Woodborough Road, Nottingham.

Mr Hay said: "He expressed remorse in interview and was very tearful.

"While going through the divorce proceedings he has not been able to see his children and then there's the public humiliation side of things.

"He is someone who is deeply ashamed, he is not a predatory paedophile."

Bird was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

"The assistance of the local community will be vital to our investigation. We very much want to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything that may have seemed unusual or out of the ordinary in Coningswath Road in the days leading up to the discovery of the victim's body.

"Were there any individuals acting strangely or a vehicle which is not usually seen in the area, for example?

"If anyone has any information at all, no matter how insignificant you may think it is, we would like to hear from you as soon as possible."
