A quiet neighbourhood was left shaken after the body of a 58-year-old man was found at his home.
Crime scene investigators cordoned off the property in Coningswath Road in Carlton following the shocking discovery on Saturday afternoon.
Forensic teams, infection control specialists, police officers and detectives worked through the night and into Sunday – whilst several ambulance and paramedic vehicles were also at the scene.
Nottinghamshire Police will be working on a post-mortem.
Detectives continued to make enquiries door-to-door on Sunday afternoon as the investigation went into its second day.
Nearby residents described the middle-aged man as quiet and someone who kept to himself.
Carl Brown, 47, has lived opposite the house on the same road with his wife Julie, 43, for 20 years.
The self-employed builder said: "I went to pick up Julie from work and noticed all the sirens.
"I looked through the bedroom window before I went out and saw an ambulance, two ambulance response vehicles – I counted at least four of those and thought something must have gone off.
"I went to bed at 11pm and the emergency services were still there.
He added: "There have been lots of police cars there – it was ringing alarm bells because you just don't know what's happened.
"On Saturday night there was a minimum of police six cars and two CID cars as well.
"The police asked us if we heard anything between 8am and 3pm and that was it.
"We just wanted to know what was happening."
Julie, a customer service assistant, said: "There were two paramedic cars there until at least 7.30pm that night.
"It's just surreal. I went to work, I came home and there were all these blue lights flashing."
Neighbours reported seeing two cars being taken away during the course of the investigation.
The cordon extended around the house and into the side garden of a house behind the property.
Two numbered evidence cards were seen on the front lawn on Sunday afternoon as forensics officers looked through the house and back garden.
David Budding, 68, of Coningswath Road, said: "The ambulance came first, then the paramedics, then there were four police cars and later on there was a riot van.
"We were looking because it's on your doorstep, not that we were being nosy – I think everyone else was the same.
"It's terrible, I can't stand looking at it, I just can't believe it."
By Sunday afternoon, there were still two crime investigation vans parked outside the house, as well as a number of other police cars dotted around the area.
Alexi Gray, 47, also of Coningswath Road, moved to the area in May.
She added: "It's just shocking, I thought I had moved to a quiet neighbourhood - it's usually very quiet and peaceful."
Detective Superintendent Kate Meynell, of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, said: "At this early stage of the investigation we are very keen to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard any suspicious activity in Coningswath Road in the days prior to the discovery of this man's body.
"Any activity which you may have noticed, no matter how trivial it might have seemed at the time, could be vital to our inquiry."
